Over the course of Flaman’s nearly 50 year history, the Flaman name has become synonymous with quality products, reasonable prices, and outstanding customer service. Through steady expansion and innovation, the company has transformed from a rural-based reseller of grain bins that operated off of the family homestead, to a Western Canadian retail powerhouse, with locations across the prairies, a vast and diversified product line, and an ever growing base of loyal and valued customers.
BEGINNINGS
In 1959, Frank Flaman purchased a brand new baler and swather, shortly after settling on the family farm near Southey, Saskatchewan with his wife, Bernice. To make the most of his investment, he began contracting out his equipment and services to other local area producers. This was Frank’s first entrepreneurial venture, setting the stage for many, many more to come.
Later that same year, Frank made another purchase, this time of 10 grain bins – although he only needed four, the larger order allowed him to qualify for dealer pricing. He promptly sold the other six for a tidy profit, rolled that amount into another bulk order, and the Flaman company was off and running.
GROWTH AND DIVERSIFICATION
Throughout the 1960’s and 70’s, Flaman steadily grew through Frank’s hard work, dedication, and business savvy. He bought in bulk, allowing him to resell his products at very reasonable prices. He accommodated his customers, giving them the option to trade in their old bins and equipment, or barter their commodities in lieu of cash purchases. And most importantly, he saw the coming trends in the marketplace (often long before his competitors), and adapted his products and services to meet them.
By the 1980’s, the Flaman name had spread far beyond the limited geographic area around Southey, and it was time for expansion. New retail stores were opened in Saskatoon and Prince Albert (additional locations soon followed, in Yorkton, Regina, Edmonton, Lethbridge and Nisku). The fast growing company was still focused on the agricultural market, but the limited product range of the early days had grown to encompass all manner of grain cleaning, handling and storage products, as well as trailers and small implements. No man (not even Frank) could possibly oversee everything that Flaman was now involved in, but luckily, he had the perfect people in place to help him—his three sons, Rudy, Don and Steve. Each took over management of one of the Saskatchewan locations, while Frank himself headed off to Alberta to help establish the company’s presence there.
In the 1990’s, Frank’s focus shifted from geographic expansion to diversification. Flaman Fitness was one such venture – starting out with only a few treadmills, the division has now become Western Canada’s largest fitness equipment retailer. Flaman Rentals was another – with the cost of equipment always climbing, producers quickly embraced the idea of renting the items they only needed occasionally. There are now close to 100 Flaman Rental dealerships scattered across Western Canada and the United States. A third was the move into security and surveillance – Flaman is now a major player in camera and alarm systems.
Through it all, the Flaman focus has never wavered from its customers. It was their needs that drove the company’s growth and diversification, and it is their needs that remain Flaman’s first and foremost priority.
FLAMAN TODAY
Today, the Flaman Group of Companies operates eight fully owned retail locations, and employs over 200 people. Close to 100 Flaman Rental dealerships expand the company’s reach even further.
Despite its growth, Flaman is still guided by the same principles that Frank founded the company on – sell at reasonable prices, conduct business fairly and responsibly, and above all else, treat the customer with unwavering friendliness and respect.
BEYOND RETAILING
In addition to being a savvy businessman, Frank Flaman is also a respected philanthropist. Under his guidance, the Flaman Group of Companies has long been involved in supporting local charities and causes. In recent years, these efforts have been greatly expanded with the establishment of the Frank Flaman Foundation.
The Frank Flaman Foundation exists to enhance the quality of life for poor, suffering and needy people, both locally and globally. The Foundation contributes funds and manpower to a wide range of charities, including World Vision, Change for Children, Operation Eye Sight, and the Mother Teresa Missionaries of Charity. As the Flaman Group of Companies continues to grow, so too will the work of the Frank Flaman Foundation.
